How Different Resin Materials Impact Blow Molding Parameters
In the extrusion blow molding (EBM) process, the resin material is the most critical variable. Achieving a high-quality finished product—whether it’s a lightweight cosmetic bottle or a heavy-duty industrial drum—requires a deep understanding of how different polymers behave under heat and pressure.

As a leading manufacturer of extrusion blow molding machine, KingPlas shares this technical guide to help operators optimize their production parameters based on resin characteristics.
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): The Industry Standard
HDPE is the most common material used in EBM due to its excellent processability and chemical resistance.
- Melt Temperature: Typically set between 180°C and 220°C.
- Parison Behavior: HDPE has a predictable “melt strength,” meaning the parison (the hot plastic tube) won’t sag too quickly.
- Key Adjustment: Focus on the cooling time. Since HDPE has high crystalline content, uniform cooling is essential to prevent warping.
PP (Polypropylene): For High-Clarity and Heat Resistance
PP is favored for products requiring higher temperature resistance or better transparency, but it is more challenging to mold than HDPE.
- Melt Temperature: Requires higher heat, usually 210°C to 240°C.
- Parison Swell: PP has a lower swell ratio than HDPE. Operators must adjust the die gap (mold tooling) to ensure the wall thickness remains consistent.
- Key Adjustment: Blow pressure needs to be higher and more rapid to ensure the material stretches perfectly into the mold corners before it sets.
LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene): Flexibility and Gloss
Often used for squeezable bottles, LDPE offers a high-gloss finish.
- Melt Temperature: Lower range, often 160°C to 190°C.
- Viscosity: LDPE flows more easily. This requires precise screw speed control on your blow molding machine to avoid parison thinning.
Engineering Resins (PVC, PETG, etc.)
These materials are sensitive to thermal degradation.
- Temperature Control: Requires extremely precise PID temperature controllers (standard on KingPlas machines) to avoid burning the material.
- Venting: Ensuring the mold has proper exhaust venting is critical as these resins can release gases during processing.

Choosing the right resin is only the start. To achieve peak efficiency and minimize scrap rates, your blow molding machine parameters must be tailored to the specific polymer’s molecular weight and melt flow index.
